Evenflo Response To Institute For Highway Safety Booster Seat Evaluation

At Evenflo, the protection and safety of children has always been and continues to be our highest priority. We want to assure you that all Evenflo seats meet and exceed government standards.  In fact, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) study on booster seats found four Evenflo seats as 'best bets;' one other rated 'good.'

We are very proud of the fact that many of our seats have received high ratings; however, we believe the recent study released by the IIHS regarding booster seat fit is misleading when it comes to the other Evenflo seats cited. While commendable, the IIHS's study appears to have adopted a generic testing method, rather than i) following the specific manufacturer's product instructions, ii) considering the manufacturer's rigorous testing or iii) accounting for the size and growth of the child occupying the seat.  Importantly, our real world results support our fit and dynamic test results.  In fact, over the course of the last ten years, Evenflo has sold more than 10,000,000 units of the booster seat models assessed in the IIHS study and we are not aware of a single incident in which a child was injured as a result of an improper fit.

Evenflo's own extensive fit studies are conducted with real children (not test dummies) in a variety of vehicles and have shown that when our instructions are followed, the lap and shoulder belts will provide the appropriate fit and protection for children of a variety of sizes.  Significantly, in addition to our own static fit studies, we subject our seats to dynamic testing at forces well beyond the federal standards in order to assess how each will actually perform in an accident.

We appreciate and share the IIHS's efforts to educate parents on the importance of the correct installation and proper use of booster seats.  However, we do not agree with their decision to "not recommend" several of the Evenflo booster seat models involved in the study.  Parents who own these models and have questions about proper installation and fit should contact our customer service line at
1-800-233-5921 between 8AM and 5PM EST.

Like the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association (JPMA, www.jpma.org), we urge consumers to read and follow all product instructions prior to use.
