Evenflo SureLATCH® Connector FAQs
What is LATCH?
LATCH, which stands for “Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children”, is designed to make proper car seat installation easier. LATCH is standard in all cars manufactured after September 1, 2002, and eliminates the need for the use of vehicle seat belts to secure car seats. The LATCH system consists of two lower anchors and a tether anchor. Vehicle manufacturers are required to provide two sets of lower anchors and three tether anchor positions in each vehicle. These vehicle anchors are specifically designed to attach to the lower anchor connectors and tether connectors found on car seats.
What is SureLATCH?
SureLATCH is a patented lower anchor system found exclusively on specific models of Evenflo car seats. Evenflo’s SureLATCH technology automatically retracts when you push down or back on your seat to create a super-snug fit by utilizing your vehicle’s LATCH system. Instead of struggling to pull a belt tight, simply attach each of the connectors to the lower anchor bars in your vehicle and then push down on the car seat. The SureLATCH auto-retractor tightens and secures the car seat in the proper position.

Is SureLATCH® safer than using the vehicle seat belts for installation?
A car seat PROPERLY installed with a vehicle seat belt should be as safe as one properly installed with standard LATCH connectors or SureLATCH connectors. However, by eliminating the need to use and lock your vehicle’s seat belt, LATCH should make it easier to get a proper installation every time.
Can I still use a an Evenflo car seat equipped with SureLATCH in a vehicle that does not have LATCH?
Yes. While SureLATCH is a convenient and easy way to attach your car seat to the lower anchor connectors in your vehicle, all Evenflo car seats equipped with SureLATCH may also be installed by using your vehicle’s seat belt system.
I heard the middle seat is safest, but our vehicle only has LATCH on the outside, what should I do?
If allowed by your vehicle manufacturer, Evenflo does allow LATCH installation in the center of the rear seat even if that seating position does not have separate lower anchors. The center seat may use one anchor from each of the outside seating positions in the rear seat. However, it is important to note that only one lower anchor connector may be attached to each vehicle anchor. Using the lower anchors as described above in the center seat will, however, eliminate the lower anchors from possible use in both outside seating positions. If LATCH is not available, you may also use the vehicle seat belt to install your car seat in the center seat of the vehicle.
Can I use the tether or lower anchors with a car seat while it is in booster seat mode?
Yes, as long as the position of the booster seat in the vehicle and the resulting fit of the seat belt over the child are not affected. Please remember that booster seats should always be secured either with LATCH connectors or the vehicle seat belt when not occupied. An unsecured booster seat can fly into and injure other occupants in the event of a crash.
Can I use both SureLATCH and the vehicle seat belt?
Other than when the car seat is being used in booster mode, no. Only one or the other should be used when utilizing the internal harness and you should generally use the one that provides the best fit in your vehicle. Always consult the vehicle owner’s manual for approved locations before installing any car seat in your vehicle.
Is there a weight limit restriction on when to discontinue the use of SureLATCH™?
Yes. The weight limit for SureLATCH depends on the car seat you are using:

Should I use a tether on my car seat when it is forward-facing?
Yes. The tether strap is for forward-facing use only. The tether strap MUST be used when securing a child in a forward-facing car seat with the harness straps. Using the tether strap will improve the stability of the car seat and may reduce the risk of injury.
