'Savvy Parents' Study Reveals 76% Worry Their Children Will Be Hurt in a Collision, but Frustrations Over Car Seat Installation and Use Pose Challenges

MIAMISBURG, OHIO (June 14, 2010) - The summer travel season is revving up, and with it comes anticipation of fun family road trips. But according to the new Evenflo® "Savvy Parents Survey," more time on the road often puts safety concerns into high gear. This survey is part of the "The Savvy Parents Guide" from Evenflo, a new online destination aimed at providing education, resources and a sense of community for parents. According to the survey, the biggest worry parents have when taking car trips is that their young child will be harmed in a collision (76%). Integral to a safe ride is proper car-seat installation, but a full 47% of mothers and 40% of fathers encounter challenges when installing car seats. And nearly half (49%) admit that installing the car seat caused them to sweat more than actually making the baby did.

The Evenflo Savvy Parents Survey is the first in a series of polls Evenflo will conduct to gauge the feelings of today's moms and dads around everyday parenting dilemmas.  The surveys are part of the "The Savvy Parents Guide" from Evenflo, a new online destination aimed at providing education, resources and a sense of community for parents in the know.  Anchored by a series of webisodes, "The Savvy Parents Guide," found at www.evenflo.com/e3SideImpact, will feature first-hand accounts by bloggers and their readers highlighting their own savvy approaches to parenting. It will also serve up insightful tips, handy hints and sanity-saving parenting techniques.

According to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, four out of five car seats are installed improperly. NHTSA data indicates that seven out of 10 child restraint systems are either the wrong size for the child or seriously misused, reducing their effectiveness in a crash. Only 4% of survey respondents say they turned to a professional (child passenger safety technician) to install their car seat.  When child restraint systems are used properly, they reduce fatal injury in passenger cars by 71% for infants and 54% for toddlers.

The Evenflo survey of 1,000 parents from across the country with children under age five, reveals the following findings:

The Seat Feat
Talk about a pain:  60% of moms and 63% of dads confess installing their car seat was challenging, while 5% of moms actually compared the experience with going through labor. And the challenge doesn't end when the seat is installed.  Parents expressed other car seat frustrations:  Adjusting car seat harness straps got parents in a tangle the most (60%), followed by making sure the straps are tight enough (48%).

Stemming the Tide of Tantrums
After safety, what do moms and dads worry about the most?  Some 48% of parents worry about keeping their child entertained while in their car seat and 32% worry their child will have a temper tantrum.  However, preparation and creativity is the key to keeping car-seat-strapped kids happy: 54% of parents stock the car with Cheerios and Goldfish snacks, 46% sing silly songs, 36% play DVDs and 27% keep books on hand. The catch? Of the Cheerio-chompers, 37% leave behind at least a dozen Os in their seat after a road trip, and 11% leave enough for tomorrow morning's breakfast bowl.

Pot Holes and Potty Mouths
Parents admit that when in driving mode they don't always take the high road:  almost three-quarters (74%) of moms and dads admit to cursing at another driver in their child's presence; while 28% have flipped the bird; and 21% have rolled down their window to scream at another driver.  While 30% of parents say they never swear in front of their kids in the car, 61% say they sometimes let the loose language fly.  Attending to a baby while driving causes 38% of parents to miss their exit once in a while, 12% to miss their exit often and 38% to get lost.

About the Evenflo "Savvy Parents Survey"
The survey was conducted among 1,000 representative Americans ages 18+ who had children under the age of 5. The interviews were conducted online by Redshift Research between June 7th and June 11th, 2010 using an email invitation and an online survey. Quotas were set to ensure reliable and accurate representation of the total U.S. population aged 18 and older with children under 5. Results of any sample are subject to sampling variation. The magnitude of the variation is measurable and is affected by the number of interviews and the level of the percentages expressing the results. In this particular study, the chances are 95 in 100 that a survey result does not vary, plus or minus, by more than 3.1 percentage points from the result that would be obtained if interviews had been conducted with all persons in the universe represented by the sample.
